Pre-production
The script
concept was conceived
in late 2011 shortly after a
meeting between mr
Manishimwe Jean Marie Vianney and Miss Yolanda Herwehijin a
volunteer from VSO
who worked with
the members Rwandan
deaf association in popularization of sign
language. and it
was later developed
into script in
2012.
Shooting
The film
was shot in the
with great guidance
from Rwanda Union,
which helped the
producers and directors in
identifying and finding several
characters to share
their stories on camera. This
documentary film was
particularly shot in
Kigali city and the
southern province of
the country. It took
an estimated time
period of 2
months to put together all
the preferred scenes
shots and other
relevant information and
materials in completion of
this story.
The story majorly took
much emphasis on
the education system
along with identifying the
challenges faced in regular
schools, Deaf schools, family members of Deaf people and Deaf adults themselves. Besides challenges
it takes a
close look on
the lives of
successful individuals with a hearing
loss who have managed
to go about or
overcome life obstacles despite their
hearing impairment state.
Post
production
“A world
without sound” was
worked in Locus
film production house
from a rough -cut editing and
translating on through the
final material. During this
time the documentary
posed a unique challenges in terms
of the main language
of use, as it addressed the challenges
of people with
special needs, particularly deaf
the directors named
sign language as
one of the
original language spoken
in this film.
Among one
of the major
challenges during this
stage, was the accuracy
to translate the
message and emotions from
a deaf person to
a regular person
who will watch
this film. The editing
phase took one whole year
before the final
completion in June 2013.
Promotion
The film
has been so
far screened in
three venues around
Kigali and it
received warm appreciating
from audiences that came
on the premiere
of these screenings. Online users

local Christian film festival
due in 15th-25 November
